Color phase. Surprise, the hitherto-unseen other half of this actually belonged to the 8-bit Mario cast!
It's amazing to think that a series older than I am still managed to maintain such a worldwide following (and unlike Sonic, not have said following engage in civil war with each new release)...
My family had already gotten an NES for my brother by the time I was born, so yes, technically, my very first entry into the Mario series was with Super Mario Bros...
However, by the time I was old enough to actually play games competently, my true first entry was with Super Mario 64 (I don't remember being old enough to play 3, and we skipped over the SNES generation in favor of the N64 initially) and while my progress with both it and eventually Sunshine were nothing to write home about, it wasn't until Galaxy and onward that I truly hit (and to this day, maintain) my stride in Mario platforming, in 2D and 3D!
On that note, now that Nintendo's basically officially handed everyone the keys to their 2D level development, I'd be very surprised if they don't make Mario's next entry a 3D affair...and I mean full on open-world 3D, not what we have with 3D Land/World...
