Alright, I'll admit it. The very first second I saw these new designs, I audibly yelled out "Dear God, Sonic what did they DO to you?!"...
...But after learning more about the direction they're taking this, and having had some time to fully absorb the designs, I'm now able to give a conscious, reasoned thought process, broken down thus...From the standpoint of the characters
, I actually really dig Sonic, Tails, and Amy's new look, now. Sonic and Tails don't really look all that different apart from the wraps, which they overdid (Unless 90% of the game and
the show take place in the desert. Not or. And.
), and the blue arms, which past this piece, I'm willing to live with. (I don't hear anyone up in arms about Shadow's or Silver's arm colors, do I?)
I honestly do like the idea of turning Amy from "fawning fangirl" to "hypercompetent ninja" (If you look closely in the game trailer, when they're all falling into that big hole, she's the only one who lands on her feet!), but I will miss the dress.
Really, the only thing that bugs me is Knuckles. I'm saying this not as a status-quo loving Sonic fan, but as an artist who's studied character design for a few years now: His head literally does not fit that new body of his. Seriously, it looks like they took Kevin Levin from Ben 10 Omniverse, painted him completely red, and Photoshopped Knux's head on there. It just looks awkward to see this big, burly, gorilla guy in motion alongside the others...From the standpoint of the TV show,
whenever a new show makes its way to the cartoon-based channels I judge it with three parameters:
Are the characters likeable? (competence is optional, but recommended)
Does it fall into the action/comedy group of shows? (I pay attention to those more)
and most important, Can it get a decent laugh out of me? (Which isn't hard, as long as it isn't toilet/grossout humor or parody humor, or Incredible Crew. Seriously, Jeremy Shada should've stuck to Adventure Time, and that's all I'm willing to say on that subject...)
What I've seen of the show accomplished all three of those, so I'm willing to take a shot at it when it does come out. From the standpoint of the toys,
this is a bit of a tenous subject, since all we know is that these toys are supposed to emphasize the same teamwork aspect as the show and the games. I'm not quite sure what that means yet, but, with any luck, they might plan to integrate them into the game or show, somehow, ala Skylanders...And from the standpoint of the games...
We all know the Sonic Cycle exists. It went on vacation when Colors and Generations came out, but then flew back on first class to punch us in the face with Lost World.
Having said that, right now, we really don't know enough to call anything on this just yet. The Wii U's one thing, but I do know Sanzaru Games at least has precedent with Thieves in Time.
Personally, I always look on the brighter side of the cycle, so I'm putting my faith in these new games as I have many times before...besides, this kind of things worked for both the Ninja Turtles, and Ratchet and Clank, so why not the Sonic Team?
